More hybrid choices, high-mileage small cars, and new
diesel technology make going green easier than ever.
WHEN HYBRIDS FIRST CAME TO OUR HIGHWAYS IN 2000,
SATURN VUE GREEN LINE
choices were limited to the small Toyota
Prius sedan and two-seat Honda Insight
hatchback. While these vehicles did offer
eye-opening fuel economy – with the
Honda approaching 70 miles per gallon
– the use of unfamiliar engine technol-
ogy and only a few available models
limited the hybrid’s appeal. Plus, these
models cost thousands of dollars more
than comparable cars because of their
expensive batteries and unique compo-
nents.
